JULIA AURORA GUZMÁN

'Columna Descompuesta'

The Arch is delighted to present Amsterdam-based Dominican artist Julia Aurora Guzmán. Her conceptual and material research explores formal systems and methods that provide support or assistance. In architecture, columns are a celebrated supporting system, sometimes even personified, as is the case with Caryatids. Guzmán takes this one step further, using the column as a metaphor for emotional support. The peroní seeds, the pattern of the separated fragments, the red thread inside and the fact that the column itself needs supporting to stay upright; all refer to sensations we feel as strong yet fragile entities.
