JOSEPH MONTGOMERY

'Image Four Hundred Eighty Eight'

The Arch is proud to present New York based artist Joseph Montgomery, best known for his collage- and shim-paintings. His works examine the phenomenon of the ‘painted image’; whereby Montgomery rather views painting as a verb, an action or a recording of choices. In his minimalist shim-paintings, Montgomery uses ready-made tapered wedges you can buy in any hardware store. The pattern combinations are decided on a specially developed algorithm, after which Montgomery sets out assembling and painting the wedges in a mostly monochrome manner. Each work is unique as the algorithm never repeats the same pattern.
