TOMMY KHA

'Prince, Midtown Memphis'

The Arch is honoured to present multiple award winning photographer Tommy Kha. As a queer Asian man born in Tennessee, Memphis, he uses self-portraiture to humorously explore dominant social expectations. In his long-term project ‘Return to Sender’ (2010-ongoing), Kha photographs himself being kissed by strangers, lovers and friends. They can kiss him however they want to, but it has to be on the lips and it has to be at night. Kha always appears motionless, with a stoic face, showing zero expression. Looking at the image, a stream of ambiguous concepts awkwardly presents themselves; intimacy, otherness, desire, race and culture.
